Part one of 30a Songwriters Interview with Derek T. Givans He has loved, lived, and played music practically his entire life. He was dressing up as and drawing pictures of Kiss as early as age 3. Growing up, Derek always had a guitar within easy reach, and began playing the drums at age 13. He has played in a lot of bands since those days. In 1996 he co-founded The Electric Fuzz Band who toured the east coast and went on to win a Best Jam Band Award in Virginia Beach, VA. More recently Derek moved to the Florida panhandle and formed Newfangled Theory in which he traded his drum set for acoustic guitar and lead vocals. Newfangled Theory won awards 3 years in a row for the Best Alternative Band in Destin, FL. Derek is now playing both solo and with a band as well as writing and recording new original music. During the summer you can find Derek performing up to 5 times a week. Derek's musical influences have expanded into a wide range since his Kiss idolizing childhood! Everything from Funk, Jazz, Reggae, Folk, Bluegrass, and Blues to Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Jam Bands, and Heavy Metal round out his influences today. Derek's powerful vocals easily adapt to all these styles which you are sure to note in his attention grabbing performances!
