Main Street DeFuniak Springs Prompts Resolution of the City Council Declaring May 2022 as National Preservation Month in the City of DeFuniak Springs
Spotlights “People Saving Places”
DeFuniak Springs, Florida • April 26, 2022 — On Monday, April 25, 2022, a Resolution was read by Mayor Pro-Tempore, Todd Bierbuam, on behalf of the City Council of DeFuniak Springs declaring May 2022 as National Preservation Month in the City of DeFuniak Springs.
Main Street DeFuniak Springs, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, protect, maintain and improve the historic business district of Downtown DeFuniak Springs, Florida, prompted the resolution as an effort to draw more attention to historic places, organizations within the city focused on preservation, and to promote heritage tourism throughout the City of DeFuniak Springs, which has four buildings and one district formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Preservation Month began as National Preservation Week in 1973. In 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even greater opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states.
“Historic place-savers like you pour their time, energy, and resources into protecting places they care about, often without recognition. So, this year’s Preservation Month theme of “People Saving Places” is a national high-five to everyone doing the great work of saving places—in ways big and small—and inspiring others to do the same,” said a representative from The National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Throughout the month of May, Main Street DeFuniak Springs will be spotlighting DeFuniak’s “People Saving Places” on their website, https://mainstreetdfs.org. Preservation-based organizations include the City of DeFuniak Springs and its Magnolia Cemetery, DeFuniak Springs Landmarks, Forward DeFuniak Inc., Tivoli Historical Society, Walton County Heritage Association, and the Walton-DeFuniak Library.
