About Alaqua Animal Refuge
Alaqua Animal Refuge, a nonprofit organization located in Northwest Florida, advocates the general welfare and humane treatment of animals by providing shelter, prevention of pet overpopulation and adoption services. Located on 10 acres in the city of Freeport, the refuge was formed by resident and animal activist, Laurie Hood, in 2007 when she discovered that countless animals were being euthanized due to the lack of a no-kill shelter/adoption organization in the area. Since that time, Alaqua Animal Refuge has helped find homes for thousands of animals. For more information on Alaqua Animal Refuge, go to www.AlaquaAnimalRefuge.org or call 850-880-6399.
Alaqua presents ASPCA’s Help a Horse Day
(Freeport, Florida) – April 23, 2016 – Alaqua Animal Refuge, in partnership with the ASPCA is holding several events to raise awareness for our rescue horses and donkeys. All proceeds will benefit Alaqua Animal Refuge.
With the help of Laura’s Horse and Pet Supply in Niceville we hope to fill a horse trailer full of goodies for all our equine friends. We will be collecting donations from April 22-April 26. All donations can be brought to Laura’s Pet and Horse Supply between 8am and 4pm (1051 E John Sims Pkwy, Niceville, FL 32578). To view the wish list visit AlaquaAnimalRefuge.org or come by Laura’s Pet and Horse Supply.
We are “Horsing Around at Alaqua” on Saturday, April 23 at the Refuge (914 Whitfield Rd., Freeport, FL) from 12pm – 4pm to celebrate a baby Colt that was just born and all of our wonderful rescue horses! We will have a photo area, tours, arts and crafts, a bake sale an old fashioned lemonade stand, an art work silent auction, and we will be raffling off a 16” collegiate English Hunt Saddle (valued at over $500!). Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event or ahead of time from Alaqua Animal Refuge or Laura’s Pet and Horse Supply.
You can also help us name Alaqua’s new baby Colt! We have narrowed it down to 5 names (Wasabi, Parsley, Sesame, Saffron, and Basil) and you can vote on which name you like best! Stop by the Refuge any time before April 23rd or come out for “Horsing around at Alaqua” and put a donation in the jar with the name that you like most. We will announce the winning name at the end of the day on April 23rd.
All of the proceeds from these events will go towards caring for Alaqua’s rescue horses and donkeys. Many of our horses were rescued from neglect or abuse situations and require rehabilitation before they can be sent to their forever homes. Alaqua currently cares for over 30 equine animals of all different ages, breeds, and abilities.
