WCSO to Launch “Drop the Drugs” Prescription Drop-off Initiative

The Walton County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is encouraging citizens to participate in the “Drop the Drugs” initiative Saturday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at six locations in Walton County, Fla.

The “Drop the Drugs” initiative is a year-round WCSO program designed to reduce prescription drug abuse and protect the water supply from improperly flushed or discarded medications. 

Citizens may choose to drop-off expired or unused medication at the following locations during the Oct. 29 event:

Walgreens, South Walton Utility, Inc., and Mossy Head Water Works will serve as temporary drop-off locations for the Oct. 29 event.

The WCSO will establish year-round drop-off locations at the main office in DeFuniak Springs and at the Paxton and South Substations for citizens to safely discard expired or unused prescription and over-the-counter medications. 

The WCSO recommends the following ways to dispose of prescription drugs:

1. Take unused drugs and medications to a designated prescription medication drop-off site for proper disposal.
2. Do not flush unused portions of drugs and medicines down the toilet.
3. Do not throw medications in the trash to reduce negative effects on the environment.
