Gulf World Marine Institute admitted 14 juvenile green sea turtles that were found cold-stunned in St. Joseph Bay. When temperatures in bays and estuaries drop to 50 degrees and below, sea turtles can sometimes become cold-stunned or "shocked". Their metabolism slows down, preventing them from properly moving and swimming to warmer waters. Thankfully, USGS surveyors found the turtles and helped transport them to us at GWMI. We will keep you posted on their progress! All response activities are conducted under Florida Marine Turtle Permit authorizations.
